Your tyres are the only part of your car that touches the road. When they’re in poor condition, your stopping distance increases, your handling suffers, and the risk of a blowout rises significantly. Here are the five warning signs you should never ignore.
1. Tread Depth Below 3mm
The UK legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but safety experts — and the tyre industry — recommend replacing at 3mm. Below this, wet-weather braking distances increase dramatically. Use the 20p test: insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves. If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tyres are approaching the limit.
2. Visible Bulges or Bubbles
A bulge in the sidewall means the tyre’s internal structure has been compromised — usually from hitting a kerb or pothole at speed. This is a tyre that can fail at any moment. Do not drive on it. Call a mobile tyre fitter immediately.
3. Persistent Vibration
Some vibration is normal on rough roads, but if you feel vibration through the steering wheel or seat on smooth roads, it could indicate a tyre that’s out of balance, a damaged tyre, or wheel misalignment. Have it checked promptly.
4. Cracks in the Sidewall
Fine cracks in the rubber — known as crazing or dry rot — indicate the tyre is ageing and drying out. UV exposure, ozone and time all degrade rubber. Cracked tyres are at risk of sudden failure. Even if there’s plenty of tread left, a tyre over 6–10 years old should be replaced.
5. Uneven Wear Patterns
Wear on one edge only suggests misalignment. Wear through the centre only suggests chronic over-inflation. Patchy or cupped wear suggests a suspension or balance problem. Any uneven wear pattern tells you something is wrong — with the tyre or the vehicle.
