Electric and Hybrid Cars: What They Mean for Your Tyres

EVs and hybrids are becoming common on North Wales roads. But their weight and instant torque mean they wear tyres faster than petrol cars. Here’s what to know.

Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids are no longer rare on North Wales roads. The Toyota Prius has been here for years; now Teslas, Nissan Leafs, and a range of hybrid SUVs are becoming commonplace. But many EV owners are discovering something unexpected: their tyres wear out faster than on equivalent petrol cars.

Why EVs Are Harder on Tyres

There are two main reasons:

Weight: EV battery packs are heavy — a Tesla Model 3 weighs around 200–400kg more than a comparable petrol car. This extra weight increases the load on each tyre, generating more heat and accelerating wear.

Instant torque: Electric motors deliver their maximum torque immediately, with no gear changes. This is what makes EVs feel so quick from a standstill — but that instant power also spins the rear wheels harder and wears them faster, particularly if you accelerate briskly.

EV-Specific Tyres

Several manufacturers now produce tyres specifically designed for electric vehicles. These typically feature:

  • Reinforced sidewalls to handle the extra weight
  • Lower rolling resistance to extend battery range
  • Noise-reducing foam inside the tyre (EVs are quieter, so road noise becomes more noticeable)

Brands like Michelin (e.Primacy), Bridgestone (Turanza ECO), Continental (EcoContact 6), and Pirelli (Elect) all produce EV-optimised tyres. They’re worth the investment if you’re covering significant mileage.

Hybrid Cars and Tyres

Hybrids like the Toyota Prius carry a smaller battery and are lighter than full EVs. The instant torque effect is present but less pronounced. Standard tyres are generally fine, but the same maintenance habits apply: regular pressure checks, rotation and alignment.

Checking Tyre Wear on Your EV

EV owners should rotate tyres every 5,000 miles rather than the standard 8,000. Rear tyres particularly take a beating on rear-wheel-drive EVs. If you’re seeing faster-than-expected rear tyre wear, check your driving style and alignment.
